• Mr. Lopez was one of four plaintiffs attorneys who negotiated a global settlement of cases involving injuries caused by Dexatrim. The Dexatrim settlements exceed $200 million.
• Mr. Lopez was involved in obtaining the $4 billion global settlement with American Home Products in the Diet Drug Litigation regarding Fen-Phen.
Here is just a sampling of the verdicts and settlements obtained by James J. McHugh:
• The first case Mr. McHugh tried was a medical malpractice case that resulted in a $1.25 million verdict. It also involved a rare instance of a punitive damages claim going to a jury.
• Mr. McHugh tried with James E. Beasley, Sr. a case against then-fugitive Ira Einhorn for his murder of Holly Maddux. The 1999 trial resulted in a $907 million verdict.
• Mr. McHugh tried and/or tried with James E. Beasley, Sr. a failure to diagnose breast cancer case where the plaintiff had survived more than five years later. The case resulted in a $2.4 million verdict.
• Mr. McHugh tried and/or tried with James E. Beasley, Sr. a failure to diagnose colon cancer case where the plaintiff had survived more than five years later. The case resulted in a $2 million verdict.
• Mr. McHugh tried and/or tried with James E. Beasley, Sr. a case involving a sponge left in a patient during surgery. The case resulted in a settlement during trial of more than $2 million.
• Mr. McHugh settled a construction accident case involving an unmarried man for $15 million.
• Mr. McHugh settled a case involving failure to diagnose meningitis in an infant, leading to brain damage. The settlement was for approximately $7.5 million and also involved a defendant hospital paying approximately $3 million out of its own “pockets” because of the lack of insurance.
• Mr. McHugh settled a case involving a brain bleed in an older gentleman for $2 million.
• Mr. McHugh settled a case for $1.2 million where a baby died six days after birth because of a failure to perform an emergency caesarean section.
• Mr. McHugh has also represented high-profile judges, union officials, police officers, and professional athletes and obtained very substantial settlements; terms must remain confidential.
