Fosamax

Fosamax is a brand name for the drug alendronate, a bisphosphonate. Biphosphonates are used to help thicken bones.

Fosamax is manufactured by Merck & Co. Generic forms of alendronate are manufactured by Barr Pharmaceuticals and Teva Pharmaceuticals.

Fosamax is taken by millions of women who are prone to osteoporosis, to build up their bones. It can cause a disorder called osteonecrosis of the jaw, a condition marked by pain, numbness, swelling, infection, loss of teeth, and exposed bone. The risk of developing this condition is higher for people who have dental disease or who are undergoing dental procedures, and with cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Osteonecrosis slows blood supply to the bone marrow, leading to lack of nutrients and creating an environment where bacteria can more easily grow. Therefore people with dental disease are more likely to develop severe cases of osteonecrosis of the jaw. The condition cannot be reversed, so treatment may require surgical removal of the affected bone.

The link between intravenous biphosphates and osteonecrosis was first recognized in 2000. In 2004 the FDA asked the manufacturers of oral alendronates to warn users of the risk of osteonecrosis of the jaw. Osteonecrosis can also affect the hip, knee, and shoulder bones.

Individuals who have suffered injury as a result of taking Permax should understand the legal remedies available to them. If you or someone you love developed heart valve damage while taking Permax, you may be eligible to recover damages.
