Over 1.4 million Americans experience a traumatic brain injury every year. Common causes include falls, automobile accidents, medical malpractice, and physical assaults. Members of our armed forces are susceptible to these injuries in addition to post traumatic stress disorder, and shaken baby syndrome is another (all-too-common) cause.
Many times, the extent of a traumatic brain injury does not manifest immediately, but it is important to get medical treatment as soon as possible to minimize the extent of these injuries by insuring proper oxygen supply to the brain and the rest of the body, maintaining adequate blood flow, and controlling blood pressure.
Symptoms of traumatic brain injury include loss of consciousness, headache, confusion, lightheadedness, dizziness, blurred vision, ringing in the ears, bad taste in the mouth, fatigue, changes in behavior, mood, or sleep patterns, trouble with memory, concentration, attention, or thinking. More severe traumatic brain injuries may also cause severe headaches, repeated vomiting or nausea, convulsions or seizures, an inability to awaken from sleep, dilation of the pupils, slurred speech, muscle weakness or numbness, loss of coordination, and increased confusion, restlessness, or agitation.
Acquired brain injuries are caused by internal conditions, such as lack of oxygen from near-drowning, seizures, aneurysm, epilepsy, stroke, suffocation, or complications of childbirth. The symptoms of acquired brain injuries are the same as those listed above for traumatic brain injuries.
