Gadolinium

Gadolinium is a metal that is highly toxic in its natural state.  Contrast dyes containing Gadolinium are commonly used in MRIs, but patients with compromised kidney function are unable to excrete the chemical.  The Gadolinium therefore remains in the body for a prolonged period of time and causes Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF), a rare, terminal disease.

NSF typically starts with the skin, initially in the lower legs, feet, arms and hands, and hardens the skin to a rock-like texture.  As the disease progresses through the rest of the body, it forces the limbs, toes and fingers to contract, a horrifically painful sensation. 

The companies who manufactured the gadolinium-contrast dyes knew their dyes placed individuals with compromised kidney function at great risk, but made no effort to adequately test the products or warn of these dangers and refer patients to contrast agents that do not contain Gadolinium.
