Mirapex

Mirapex—the most popular dopamine agonist drug prescribed to control tremors and other symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease and Restless Leg Syndrome—has been linked to excessive gambling and other obsessive compulsive behaviors. Mirapex and similar drugs such as Permax increase the level of dopamine in the brain, helping Parkinson’s patients control their body movements. However, dopamine also heightens feelings of elation and satisfaction that may lead to addictive, pleasure-seeking behaviors.

If you or a loved one has taken Mirapex and suffered devastating financial and emotional losses as a result of compulsive gambling, you may be eligible to recover your damages through a product liability lawsuit. Please contact Lopez McHugh LLP for a complimentary review of your case with an attorney concentrating in this up and coming litigation.

Reports Linking Mirapex and Gambling

The link between Mirapex and gambling was first recognized in August 2003.  Researchers at the Muhammad Ali Parkinson’s Research Center evaluated 1,800 Parkinson’s patients—529 of which took Mirapex—for a duration of one year. They found that 1.5 percent of study participants taking the drug developed a serious gambling addiction that cost them significant financial losses.

In July 2005, these results were confirmed after a Mayo Clinic report found that 11 Parkinson’s patients using Mirapex experienced a gambling addiction and other obsessive behaviors. Since then, more than a dozen more Mayo Clinic patients have suffered the same side effect of the drug.  The serious adverse events associated with Mirapex and other dopamine agonists were never revealed to doctors and patients. While drug manufacturer Boehringer Ingelheim has since strengthened the drug’s label to add the compulsive gambling risk, the warning comes too late for many.
