Matthew R. Lopez

Matt Lopez

Matthew Ramon Lopez has been exposed to the legal world since he was a child. Inspired by his father, Matthew knew at an early age that he wanted to be a civil trial attorney representing consumers and victims of corporate greed and injustice – ultimately to help, in some significant and meaningful ways, those whose lives have been adversely affected by injuries and suffering caused by such misconduct.

Matthew graduated from the University of Colorado at Boulder, in 2003, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Associations. While attending CU-Boulder’s prestigious Leeds School of Business, Mr. Lopez obtained an emphasis in Finance and an Area of Application certificate in Real Estate. He also earned a minor degree in Biological Sciences.

After graduating from CU-Boulder in 2003, Matthew was formally introduced to the legal profession working as a law clerk for the nationally recognized, consumer watch dog law firm Lopez, Hodes, Restaino, Milman & Skikos, founded by his father, Ramon R. Lopez, the founder and managing partner of Lopez McHugh LLP. While working for Lopez Hodes, Matthew worked closely with the firm’s lead attorneys and partners on the Zyprexa® mass tort litigation. During this time, he was first introduced to and learned the skills and work ethic necessary to effectively represent injured clients.

Matthew earned his Juris Doctor degree from Chapman University School of Law in 2008 with CALI “Excellent Achievement” awards in Remedies and Legal Writing Skills. While obtaining his law degree, Mr. Lopez interned for the Elder Law Clinic providing free legal assistance to the elderly. He successfully appealed one client’s denial of disability benefits from Social Security.

Mr. Lopez also clerked with Lopez McHugh LLP since the law firm’s inception in 2007. While clerking for Lopez McHugh, he helped handle the day-to-day case specifics on the firm’s Fosamax® litigation, Zyprexa® litigation, and assisted in the AMO® litigation.

Matthew joined Lopez McHugh as an Associate in 2008 and is currently working on mass tort cases involving pharmaceutical products and medical devices. He is presently leading the firm’s operations in the Chantix® litigation, Zyprexa® litigation, and is actively involved in the firm’s pain pump litigation, as well as drug-eluting stent litigation against Cordis Corp. and Boston Scientific Corp. Mr. Lopez’s main areas of practice also include medical negligence and other contract and tort personal injury cases, such as breach of employment contract, automobile accidents, and premise liability actions.

Mr. Lopez is admitted to practice before all of the courts of the State of California and the United States District Court for the Central District of California. He is a member of the American Association for Justice (AAJ), American Bar Association (ABA), and the Orange County Bar Association (OCBA).

Matthew is the Manager/Captain of the law firm’s Newport Beach Coed Soccer League soccer club – Lopez McHugh Football Club (LMFC), who were the Spring of 2009 Division 2 champions. He enjoys spending his spare time being active and outdoors. Mr. Lopez enjoys all sports, but is particularly keen to soccer, basketball, and football, as well as, snowboarding. He is also an avid guitar player. Above all, he enjoys spending time with his family and friends.

As with the rest of the Lopez McHugh family, what sets Matthew Ramon Lopez apart from others is his passion and motivation to help his clients obtain the justice they deserve, no matter what challenges or hurdles that may be present. Mr. Lopez believes in the philosophy “do unto others” and he believes in one simple rule – doing what is right. He fights for his beliefs and for the fairness and justice that forms the foundation of the practice of law, and being an advocate, especially for the weak and vulnerable in our society.
