
Matthew R. Lopez has been exposed to the legal world his entire life and knew at an early age that he wanted to be a civil trial attorney representing victims of corporate greed and injustice, ultimately to help those whose lives have been adversely affected by injuries and suffering caused by such misconduct.
Mr. Lopez graduated from the University of Colorado at Boulder, in 2003, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. While attending CU-Boulder’s prestigious Leeds School of Business, Mr. Lopez obtained an emphasis in Finance and an Area of Application certificate in Real Estate. He also earned a minor degree in Biological Sciences.
After graduating from University of Colorado, Mr. Lopez was formally introduced to the legal profession working as a law clerk for the nationally recognized, consumer protection law firm Lopez, Hodes, Restaino, Milman & Skikos from 2004 to 2005. While working for Lopez Hodes, Matthew worked closely with the firm’s lead attorneys and partners on the Zyprexa® mass tort litigation. During this time, he was first introduced to and learned the skills and work ethic necessary to effectively represent injured clients.
Mr. Lopez earned his Juris Doctor degree from Chapman University School of Law in 2008 with CALI “Excellent Achievement” awards in Remedies and Legal Writing Skills. While obtaining his law degree, Mr. Lopez interned for the Elder Law Clinic providing free legal assistance to the elderly. He successfully appealed one client’s denial of disability benefits from Social Security.
Mr. Lopez interned with Lopez McHugh LLP as a law student in 2007, and joined the firm as an associate in 2008. Currently, he is working on mass tort cases involving defective drugs and medical devices and is presently leading the firm’s operations in the Chantix® litigation. Mr. Lopez is also actively litigating medical malpractice cases for the firm. Mr. Lopez’s main areas of practice include defective medical devices and drugs, medical negligence, products liability, premises liability, and serious personal injury cases of all types.
Mr. Lopez is admitted to practice before all of the courts of the State of California, the United States District Court for the Central District of California, and the United States District Court for Colorado. He is a member of the American Association for Justice (AAJ), American Bar Association (ABA), and the Orange County Bar Association (OCBA).
In his spare time, Mr. Lopez enjoys playing sports, playing his guitar, and being around family and friends. Above all, he enjoys spending time with his beautiful wife and their Golden Retriever, Mowgli.
Mr. Lopez believes in the philosophy “do unto others” and he believes in one simple rule – doing what is right. He fights for his beliefs and for the fairness and justice that forms the foundation of the practice of law, and being an advocate, especially for the weak and vulnerable in society.
